The official description says each gadget can be taken apart, cleaned, repaired with replacement parts, and assembled with a repair toolset. That confirms cleaning is gameplay-relevant, not decorative flavor.
It also confirms multiple tools exist, but it does not publish a tool glossary or claim that every tool applies to every component.

If a gadget is still stuck in the sonic bath
The publisher's August 8 list said some gadgets could become stuck in the sonic bath. On August 11, update 1.0.009r listed that issue under fixes. Treat the older warning as history, not the current default state.
If it still happens on an updated build, record the gadget, repair stage, platform, and game version for the official support board. The patch note does not provide a player-side workaround or prove that every recurrence is impossible.
Where the official Airbrush route starts
The official June 16 demo announcement says to purchase the Airbrush tool and color palettes on the in-game computer, then use them to customize devices.
That confirms the acquisition route and purpose. It does not document every control, unlock condition, or a universal fix for a painting step, so those details remain unclaimed.
